Tenth Austrian Creative Industries Report: Focus on Resilience in the Corona Crisis

Despite Corona's dampening effect, the creative industries continue to grow. Tenth Austrian Creative Industries Report proves relevance for the entire national economy.

Despite being greatly affected by the pandemic, the creative industries are generating added value and employment far beyond their own sector in these challenging times. The Austrian economy was able to profit enormously from the purchase of creative services during the crisis. In the process, numerous companies and industries strengthened their business activities during the pandemic years or developed tools that were essential for survival. With almost 50,000 businesses, the Austrian creative industries account for more than one in ten companies within the Austrian economy. These employ around 5 percent of all gainfully employed persons (2019: around 170,000 self-employed and employed persons). After a decline of about 3.9 percent in the first crisis year 2020, employment in 2021 exceeded the pre-crisis value of 2019 by about 1.7 percent. This is shown in the Tenth Austrian Creative Industries Report, which is published by Creative Industries Austria on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Labor and Economic Affairs (BMAW) and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber. The recovery is primarily attributable to the software and architecture sectors. During the crisis, the software and architecture sectors were able to increase their revenues, which were already above the pre-Corona level in the first half of 2021. The film and music industries, on the other hand, have suffered profound losses since the beginning of the Corona crisis. By contrast, sectors such as design, photography, translation/interpretation, advertising, radio & TV, and publishing are on the road to recovery.
