Numbers, Data, Facts & Economic Effects

The creative industries continue to develop positively

The Austrian creative industries continue to develop positively. With 11% of all enterprises, it is an important economic factor and shows a dynamic development in terms of number of enterprises, employment, turnover and value added in both the short-term and long-term analysis. Growth in the period between 2008 and 2017 is much higher than in the Austrian economy as a whole. However, in a year-on-year comparison of 2016/17, revenue and gross value added have recently developed more weakly than in the economy as a whole, due to declining developments in software and games, namely in the area of IT consulting services.

On the one hand, a growth of creative enterprises can be observed - between 2008 and 2017, employment, turnover and gross value added increased to a greater extent than the number of enterprises. On the other hand, the number of companies has once again risen more strongly than in the economy as a whole in a year-on-year comparison in 2016/17, which is also reflected in a slightly higher proportion of one-person enterprises (EPU) (61%) (previous year: 60%). Thus, the creative industries are and will remain small businesses.

Vienna remains the creative hotspot in Austria - 40 % of all creative industries companies have their headquarters here. They employ 43 % of all employees and generate more than half of the revenues and almost half of the gross value added in the creative sector.

The Austrian creative industries have a strong leverage effect on the entire economy and thus make an important contribution to the competitiveness of the Austrian economy. It triggers direct and indirect economic production in Austria to the tune of € 39.1 billion, generates a total value added of € 19.9 billion and secures a total of about 303,800 jobs in the Austrian economy.

The creative industries are very input-intensive - 51 % of production costs are accounted for by intermediate inputs - and exhibit strong networking with other industries and within the creative industries themselves. With regard to the distribution structure, the creative industries support downstream production and investment activities in large parts of the domestic economy with their services (59 % in total). Also indirectly, the deliveries of the creative industries strengthen investments and exports of the Austrian economy.

In comparison to an average service industry (12.7%), the creative industries are relatively strong exporters: In 2015, goods and services worth € 4.1 billion were exported, resulting in an export share of 18.3% (as of October 2019).
