CALL: “PLAYING ART” Game Ideas

What happens when art becomes a playground? The “PLAYING ART” call invites developers, students, hobbyists, teams, and studios from Austria to develop game ideas based on the Belvedere’s digital collection.

The call for entries originated from the SUBOTRON Game Jam Series, which took place at eight universities in 2026 and is part of the FROG Conference. Due to the high level of interest, the call is now open to the entire Austrian games community. We are looking for browser-based games that creatively engage with the Belvedere’s freely available digital content.

The museum’s open-content collection includes thousands of works of art ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day and offers a wide variety of inspiration for new game worlds, characters, narratives, and mechanics. Whether paintings are used for level design, historical figures as playable characters, or works of art as the starting point for puzzles and interactive stories—there are virtually no limits to creativity.

Selected projects will be presented at Belvedere 21 as part of FROG 2026 from November 20 to 22. In addition, a jury will select entries for the “Austrian Impact Game Idea 2026” competition. Submitted games must be playable in a browser via itch.io. Non-violent content, as well as compliance with ethical standards and regulations for the protection of children and youth, are required.
