Blockchain Data Certification: Do you create new works, and is your intellectual property your capital?

With the WKÖ’s blockchain data certification service, you can easily document your authorship and reap the benefits.

With blockchain technology, creative authors receive proof of the creation date for their works, whether they are advertising concepts, texts, graphics and illustrations, photos, films, or software. When submitting proposals, pitches, or accepting commissions, you can inform your clients that your work has been documented in the WKO’s data certification service and that they must respect your copyright and compensate you for any use of your work. Is your copyright being infringed? In court, it is now possible to present the file’s digital fingerprint along with the date and time of creation and
to document the work contained in the file.

Here’s how it works:

Save the confirmation with a digital fingerprint

  • Works that are stored in a digital file on your system can be selected via the Data Certification Service.
  • In the service interface, you can also add a description of the work and its title to the file.
  • A digital fingerprint (hash value) is then created on the blockchain, recording the time of creation. Only this fingerprint leaves your computer. The contents of the file—the work you created—thus remain completely confidential and unchanged on your computer.
  • The Data Certification Service will then automatically generate a confirmation PDF. You should save this PDF along with the selected file. At the same time, the PDF will be sent to your personal inbox on mein.wko.at.

Attention! The file always remains on your own computer and is not stored elsewhere! The file in question must therefore also be backed up to serve as proof of copyright. The Mobile Signature account offers a good service for this purpose, allowing every Mobile Signature holder to use 2 GB of free storage. www.handy-signatur.at

You can also use the data certification service this way:

  • Go to “mein.wko.at”
  • You can register for free on the sign-up page
  • To do so, click “Register for free” at the very bottom of the form
  • Fill out the form and check the box to accept the Terms of Use
  • You’ll receive a confirmation email with a link to activate your account
  • Now you can log in to mein.wko.at and use the data certification service
