How Creative Catalysts Help Shape the Triple Transition SuccessfullyThe Transformative Impact of the Creative Industries
Today, companies are facing the greatest transformation in decades. Artificial intelligence is changing knowledge work, climate change is demanding new ways of doing business, and geopolitical crises are increasing the pressure on competitiveness and resilience. The digital transformation has evolved into a “triple transition ”: the simultaneous digital, environmental, and economic-social transformation.
The creative industries play a key role in this process. They combine creativity, design, technology, and entrepreneurial thinking, helping companies successfully implement change not only technologically but also economically.
Successful transformation combines technology with creativity.Transformation requires more than just technology
Transformation does not begin with the introduction of new technologies. It fundamentally changes business models, value creation, collaboration, skills, and relationships with customers. New technologies only realize their economic benefits once they become understandable, user-oriented, and marketable.
The Effect
Creative industries translate technological possibilities into economically successful products, services, business models, and customer experiences. They make innovation practical for businesses.
Transformation arises from the combination of different skills.69% incorporate external sources of innovation
Six characteristics define the transformative power of the creative industries:
- extensive use of digital technologies,
- innovative business and financing models,
- Professionals at the intersection of creativity, technology, and entrepreneurship,
- flexible and adaptable corporate structures,
- Commitment to sustainability,
- The Impact of Innovation on Other Industries.
These competencies enable the creative industries to embrace technological developments at an early stage and integrate them with economic, creative, and social needs.
The Effect
Creative industries combine technology, creativity, business, and sustainability. This makes them key partners in transformation for companies and other industries.
Transformation begins when future trends are identified.12 future drivers are transforming the economy and society
Twelve drivers of the future will shape the development of the creative industries and the economy as a whole through 2030. They highlight the technological, economic, and social developments that will determine innovation and competitiveness in the future:
- The availability of data and knowledge opens the door to new business models and innovative products.
- Legal frameworks and regulations build trust, protect intellectual property, and ensure data sovereignty.
- Collaborative innovation labs promote the joint development and testing of new solutions.
- Digital education and lifelong learning strengthen digital skills and the ability to continue developing.
- Social value and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are becoming key drivers of innovation and competitiveness.
- Sustainable consumption is transforming markets and creating demand for new products, services, and business models.
- Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and automation are transforming creative work as well as products and services.
- A user-friendly human-technology relationship is becoming a key factor in the success of digital products and services.
- Augmented, virtual, and mixed reality open up new experiences, applications, and business models.
- New economic models and digital marketplaces are transforming value creation, collaboration, and markets.
- Digital business organization and collaboration are creating new forms of cooperation and accelerating innovation.
- Gamification is gaining importance as a method for motivation, engagement, and user retention.
Today
Many of these developments have gained significant momentum since the study was published. Artificial intelligence, data, sustainability, digital skills, and new forms of collaboration, in particular, are shaping the Triple Transition today and transforming the economy and society faster than expected.
The Effect
Creative industries identify technological and societal changes early on and translate them into marketable products, services, business models, and new forms of collaboration. In doing so, they help companies actively shape transformation and capitalize on future opportunities.
The Effect
Creative industries make transformation a concrete reality. They help companies successfully integrate new technologies into their business models, products, and services.

Change occurs where different areas of expertise come together. How Creative Industries Enable Transformation
The unique transformative power of the creative industries is based on a clear mechanism of action. It
- identify new developments early,
- combine technology with creativity,
- develop new business models,
- design user-centered applications,
- bring together different disciplines,
- support companies in implementing innovations.
Transformation does not happen by chance. It arises from the combination of technological, creative, economic, and social competencies.
The future depends on the decisions we make today.Transformation is something we can shape
Transformation is not an automatic process. Technological progress alone does not determine how competitive companies and economies will be in the future. Equally crucial are the political, economic, and social conditions under which innovation takes place.
The three future scenarios therefore depict different paths of development—depending on the course we set today.
Scenario 1
A future in which Europe consistently prioritizes creativity, innovation, digitalization, and collaboration. Creative industries will become key partners in transformation and foster new sources of competitiveness.
Scenario 2
Digital innovation and sustainability together enable new value creation. Creative solutions help companies align their environmental and economic goals.
Scenario 3
The lack of a supportive framework leads to fragmented markets, limited cooperation, and a lack of access to data and technologies. This hinders innovation and weakens competitiveness.
Today
Developments in recent years show just how real these different paths to the future are. Generative artificial intelligence, climate change, and geopolitical crises are significantly increasing the pressure on companies to transform. Whether this leads to new competitiveness depends largely on whether creativity, innovation, and collaboration are specifically promoted and on the framework conditions that are established in Europe.
The Effect
Creative industries help companies actively shape transformation. They combine technology, creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking, thereby creating the conditions necessary for the triple transition to lead to innovation, sustainable value creation, and competitiveness.
Creativity Becomes a Competitive Advantage and a Resource for InnovationTransformation requires the right framework conditions
The future of transformation is not predetermined. It is shaped by the decisions that politics, business, and society make today.
Successful transformation therefore requires not only investment in technology, but also
- digital skills,
- Access to data,
- creative problem-solving,
- new business models,
- Experimental spaces,
- Collaboration between business, academia, and the creative industries,
- sustainable innovation strategies,
- International networking.
The Effect
Creative industries have the greatest impact in environments where innovation-friendly conditions bring together creativity, technology, and collaboration. This creates the conditions necessary for a successful triple transition.
The challenges have changed significantly since the study was published—but its key findings have not.The transformative power of the creative industries is more important today than ever before
With generative artificial intelligence, the climate crisis, and geopolitical crises, companies today face a far more complex challenge than they did just a few years ago. Digital transformation alone is no longer enough. What is needed are solutions that combine digital innovation, sustainability, and resilience. It is precisely under these conditions that the competencies that distinguish the creative industries are becoming increasingly important: creativity, design, user-centricity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the ability to translate new technologies into marketable applications.
Today’s “Triple Transition” thus confirms the study’s key finding: Successful transformation does not result solely from new technologies. It succeeds where creativity, technology, and entrepreneurial thinking work together. This is precisely where the transformative power of the creative industries lies.
The special report “Digital Transformation 2030” was prepared by KMU Forschung Austria on behalf of Kreativwirtschaft Austria (KAT) and published in 2021 as the focal point of the Ninth Austrian Creative Industries Report. The study focuses on the question of what role the creative industries play in the digital transformation of the economy and what competencies make them key drivers of transformation processes. To this end, the study develops a strategic outlook for the future through 2030 based on six characteristics of the creative industries, twelve drivers of the future, three future scenarios, and eight areas of action in innovation policy.
